Arthur Jeffes - Sounds of the Universe | Compositions from gravitational waves
Arthur Jeffes of Penguin Cafe releases 'Sounds Of The Universe' - compositions created from outputs of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory: LIGO.
When two black holes find one another in deep space, they start to circle each other, getting ever closer until they crash and become one. Black holes are so massive that their dance makes space (and time) ripple in reaction, and these ripples are known as gravitational waves. The crash may have happened billions of years ago, but the gravitational waves travel at the speed of light towards our detectors on Earth, and we hear their story re-told today.
Physicists piece together the history of the black holes before their catastrophic collision by measuring the change in frequency of the ripples as a function of time. This decomposition can also be translated into audio… and it sounds like a chirp.
Arthur Jeffes, of Penguin Cafe, uses samples from gravitational wave signals to tell the stories of black holes colliding without words. He cuts up the data, picks out overtones, and creates a percussive palette. These chirping sounds are interwoven with an epic musical narrative created by mapping the frequencies of the gravitational waves onto a musical stave, played by the city of Prague’s philharmonic orchestra. The result is an adventurous musical impression of gravitational waves journeying through spacetime.
Arthur was introduced to these cosmic concepts via his school friend Samaya Nissanke - associate professor in gravitational wave and multi-messenger astrophysics at the University Of Amsterdam - and a key contributor to the LIGO project. As Arthur explains:
“Back in the mid 2010s, I was visiting Samaya in LA and she got to talking about these amazing things called gravitational waves. We went to school together and then went to the same university - and while my maths was never as good as hers I always loved hearing about her amazing astrophysics adventures. As a vicarious glimpse into the deep universe, her work was always fascinating to me. So when she started showing me these gravitational waves - both in modelled form and in actual detections - I jumped at the chance to play with them. These ‘chirps’ are great fun, both as sounds and as jumping off points for incredible ideas. The events that cause them are so unimaginably huge and violent, while at the same time beautiful and mysterious, music seems the perfect way to begin to make sense of them.”
Sounds Of The Universe is itself a synergy of music and science. Much of the language Arthur uses to describe his composition will be familiar to the scientists working in the gravitational wave community: filters, overtones, frequency bands. With these tools Arthur communicates the whimsicality of the extraordinary contrast in scales of our universe. Chirps, blips and glitches make light of the underlying origin of lonely black holes finding each other in the scary, vast expansiveness of space.
As physicists prepare to switch on LIGO for its fourth "run" in late May 2023, we present this beautiful live performance of Sounds Of The Universe - with music created from previous LIGO data outputs - and with new detections imminent, ponder what wonders of art and science may be created next.
Arthur is a supporter of The Great Oven - a global food security and community-building organisation. This performance was captured at “The Banquet” a three-day celebration of food, music and art in support of The Great Oven at Konvent Zero, Catalonia, Spain.

Like his father before him A truly beautiful soul. Thank you
Thank you for taking me on this exciting, rhythmic journey. Love this. This made me smile.
🫀🫀🫀
A genius like his father. Bless you
Amazing 😮
How come this has only so little views and likes? One of the live’s mysteries.
it's so weird seeing old videos getting shorts'd. I don't think I'll ever get over it.
My first exposure to PCE was the One2One advert in the UK that this featured on. They have a magic ability to cheer you up. It's impossible to feel sad when listening to Yodel 2 by PCA - would recommend.
Best version so far. Thank you for sharing.
Stunningly beautiful
i do still love spacehog though
Would of been better without the silly sound effects ( just the music ) thumbs down for me - will search original track .
Well you got a thumbs up from me
@@someguywithnoplan6395 good for you
Has this been officially released? Cannot seem to find it?
This is a perfect musical representation of this. Absolutely love this piece! Thank you!
Bravo..! Such an incredible project. Looking forward to hearing new work from the next set of LIGO outputs 🤯
wonderful, thoughtful and greatly appreciated...thank you.
Spectacular!
Fascinating, thrilling, beautiful.

This song, and this version especially, is the epitome of why I love electronic music. Just man and machine working together to make something beautiful :D
I’m here due to the classic Aussie indie flick called “Malcom” was recently uploaded to Netflix in Australia. I loved that song and movie as a kid a am currently going down the penguin rabbit hole, and loving it . Thankyou.
Awesome.
I love Neil Codling body Language 😊
magic
It has a good beat. You could dance to it. I'll give it as 10.
Buenos recuerdos del 85 reeditados. Una maravilla
Amazing
This made me smile.
Just found out about this song after reading an interview with Royston Langdon from Spacehog. What a cool find!
Superb❤️❤️
So good. I just wish someone would have answered that phone.
I love this piece - Absolutely Gorgeous, Bye for now love Alan 👨🏫️

You are extremely excellent and superb keep up the great works you do thank you

Didn’t think I could love this song anymore than I already did. Wow.
I love Penguin Cafe with everything. Subtle pleasure. <3
That part at 1:47 brings me pure joy and I can't possibly understand why or how
Indeed, and so does 'Perpetuum Mobile' for me!
Very uplifting & great music.
First time I heard this was on the Aussie film Malcolm.
I absolutely love this, its relaxing, thought provoking, inspiring and uplifting ❤
Amazing👍
You are simply wonderful!!! Greatings a from a cello player in Barcelona.
Really beauiful song. The best one on the album.
Give my love to the future of humankind...
Ah...the end of Napoleon Dynamite. Always wondered what that piece was.
This has lost the mechanical quality of the original.
Possibly. But I kind of like the jamming that happens. Sounds great with the off time feel of the ring tone.
